Evaluation

What was the task?:
The task set was to create a 90 second depict video. Depict is a competition for poeple all over the world who enters with their own made 90 second video wich they had created, by doing this the people who entered have the chance of winning £2500 prize money. Your video can be made from any genre and made with any budget.
The film which our group created was carving a pumpkin. We decided a decent film to create would be to show the creative side of one of our members and put her creativity into carving a pumpkin into something challenging such as Yoda.

Discuss camera work:
There's a lot of camera work/shots for our video which is pretty similar throughout most of the video. The camera is placed on a tripod using a medium length shot. This is very appropriate for our video as viewers would want to see the pumpkin at all times in all angles whilst being created into the image of Yoda face. Another shot that is used quite a few times is a low angle and extreme close up. We used these angles to  give the audience a closer look at Yoda features and also so they can see the progess of the pumpkin. Another shot we used was a close up. We used this shot a couple of times within the video to show the audience, us turning the light on and also lighting the candle. We also have a high angle shot of the pumpkins flesh being cleaned out of the pumpkin and also the head of the pumpkin being lifted of so the candle can be positioned inside.

Discuss mise-en-scene:
Most of the scenes in our video have natural lightening but as we was filming on different days during different times, the lightening  would obviously be different due to the weather and like i said the different times during the day. Throughout the video, it looks asif the lightening is the same through the whole video, this is because of the colour editing we did, we thought it would look much more presentable if all the shots looked near enough the same colour therefore the audience wouldn't spot/notice the change of days.

Discuss editing and continuity:
Our group needed to do quite alot of editing in order to get our video as short as possible and also so the viewers didnt get bored watching a certain shot continuously. The main edit was the speeding up of the whole video and also cutting certain shots down and cutting out parts that wasnt needed. We done this because carving the whole pumpkin took alot of time to make of the course of 6 days. Overall we had about 1 hour and 30mins of footage from the pumpkin we carved but we managed to edit it and get the footage down to 2 minutes. As we filmed over a number of days they may have been some continuity errors that occurred for example one of the errors was the clothing on Leonie for example the colour of her clothing would be slightly different on each days. Another continuity error that occurred was different movements of the bowl we contained the pumpkin flesh as sometimes it is close to the pumpkin and other times it is further away, this was due to filming on different days but a good thing is the errors was not pointed out in class and they weren't noticable.

Discuss sound:
In the video we created there was no dialogue what so ever.
Our aim was to get a Halloween themed music to play while the pumpkin was being carved to show the effect and the theme of what we was doing but because this was copyright we decided to use a song which a member of our group had been sang herself. This soundtrack was not irrelevant as the theme of the video was Halloween/scary and this song was nothing but smoothing and sweet, but that was our last resort so we had to use that. I did look on many legal websites for certain themes and music but there was none that I really liked and that i thought was suitable.

Overall, what i think:
I personally think the video is slightly boring, as all you're watching is a pumpkin being carved into Yoda, but i also think that the video is quite interesting as you can see the changes within the movements of the video and its quite fascinating to watch. I think maybe we should of done something a little more interesting but it was a little hard as we should've had more in our group (1+) but due to certain problems he was no longer in our group which for us was quite difficult as an extra pair of hands would've helped a lot. I like how detailed Yoda's features was and how clear they were on the pumpkin, they were very easy to see they stood out. Overall i enjoyed taking part in making this short video and would very like to do it again but creating something a little more interesting.
Leonies head is in this shot and covering certain parts of the pumpkin therefore you can not see what she's is doing nor the progression of the carving. This is a major error as the audience would like to see the changes throughout the carving and not someones head preventing them of seeing so.

Comparing this shot to the one above, this one is appropriate and very clear. You can see all the features and the changes throughout the video, with no head or arm in the way to stop you from seeing the object. This is a good, clear shot as the audience can clearly see whats happening and whats different from the shot before.
